Big Toe's Hi-Fi have been running monthly friday night Jamborees at the Wee Red Bar, Edinburgh College of Art, since the man they call Barba Poppa Choppa (a.k.a John Farrugia) came to study at Edinburgh College of Art 6 years ago. As his first project John started to create a Hi-Fi or soundsystem in the traditional reggae sense, and as time has gone on both the Hi-Fi and the Big Toe's crew have grown to become one of the frontrunners in the Scottish soundsystem scene.
Big Toe's play all styles within the reggae (Dub- Dancehall- Hip Hop- Dupstep- Grime) genre, whilst keeping very much within the traditions of a true Jamaican soundsystem. Working closely with many of the local deejays (MCs) on the Scottish scene, Big Toe's regularly have a number of MCs and singers taking turns to chat, toast and nice up the dance in true rub-a-dub stylee.
As well as running the sound the Big Toe's crew have also recently started their own record label. Currently up to their 5th release, the label features collaborations with the likes of Neil Landstrumm ( Scandinavia, Planet Mu ), Capitol 12 12 and American Rapper Donald D and showcases live remixes of songs such as Johnny Nash's 'Cupid' over Sly and Robbie's 'Revolution' rythm and Junior Demus mashed up over Luke Vibert/ Jean-Jaque-Perry's heavy crunking beats. The releases reflect the musical diversity of how the Big Toe's deejays like to play, regularly incorporating live remixes of tracks and dropping in-house dubplates and specials made specifically for the dance.
Big Toe's also play host to guest deejays and soundsystems from all over the world including Digital Dubs ( Rio, Brazil), Belly Full Soundsystem ( Canada) , Worries Outernational (Dublin), Ghislain Poirer, The Scratch Bastid (Canada). Closer to home Big Toe's have featured artists such as Mungo's HiFi, Bass Warrior Soundsystem, The Heatwave Affair, The Bushrocker Family Hifi and Symbiosis Soundsystem from Leeds to name but a few.
